Hey, it's a Cloud!

When I hand my business card to someone I nearly always get a comment:  

“Oh, a cloud.”

“These are so cute!” 

“Nice, what’s that paper?”

“Of course, it’s a cloud.” 

It’s the exact reaction I want. 

I want them to get noticed, to stand out. 

For years my cards were square, with a soft touch varnish, which also got noticed. At the same time I was running out of cards, I met with Andrew at Allegra printing. He gave me a tour and we ended up in the back area surrounded by Heidelberg presses. As if those weren’t amazing enough, the walls were lined with  old school die cuts. Hundreds of them. I was intrigued and my brain clicked. 

My new cards needed to be a unique shape. 

I asked Andrew to find something cool that would work for a business card, and he was up for the task. At the last second I said, “If you can find a cloud shape, even better.” 

He found a cloud, and it was perfect.

This little card is often the first sample of my work that people see. I don’t carry other samples of work on me. Yes, I can show them photos on my phone, but that’s awkward. I can send them to my website or a link to my portfolio, but will they remember to visit it? To read that email? Not likely. 

But put something in someone's hand, and they have no choice but to look at it, feel it, flip it over. I have a stack of business cards on my desk from networking events and conferences. The ones that have stuck with me are either the cards that are well designed, with bold color or something that makes them stand out. Or, it’s the cards that I can’t read, maybe the font is too small or too light or there’s too much going on. 

Take a look at your card, is the important information easy to find? 

Can you read it without your glasses? 

Will it make an impression? 

Or will someone toss it in the recycling bin the moment they get home?
