Patches!

Last week at a networking event a woman asked me a new question.
“What have you designed lately that’s been out of the ordinary?”
It’s a good question. And a pleasant reprieve from “What do you design?”
I thought for a second, “Hummm, let’s see… Patches! I designed patches.”
“Patches?”
“Yes! Hold on, I’ll show you.”
I grabbed my phone and showed her the photos I had taken just that morning.
“Oh, those are so fun!”
When I got the request months ago via text, I said the same thing, “Patches?” I had never designed patches before, but like any design project, the process is the same. It doesn’t matter if it’s a brochure or a logo or a website. Every project has to start with clear communication.
How can I help them come up with a solution?
What is it they think they want?
Is that the best solution for their problem?
What are the limitations?
What are the final deliverables?
What is the timing and finally, what is the budget?
Depending on the project, the questions vary. For logos, I like my clients to do some research and answer specific questions on fonts, color, and personas. For the patches, I was already familiar with their brand, I just needed to know what they had been dreaming of.
I helped Mosaic create their logo and brand initially a few years ago and have created jerseys, sweats, signage, t-shirts, and now patches. I also helped them migrate their website to Crossbar, which I have to say was seamless.
So thank you, Mosaic, for pushing me out of my comfort zone to design your patches. I think they turned out great! It’s always great to see your players light up!
